The Jungle initially appeared in a socialist newspaper. At one point, he also stumbled upon a laborer’s wedding party, which served as the inspiration for his opening chapter. For The Jungle, a 26-year-old Sinclair spent seven weeks in Chicago, touring stockyards and slaughterhouses and interviewing the laborers there, along with priests, bartenders, policemen, politicians and social workers. Yet he reported his books much like a journalist. Unlike most other muckrakers, such as Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens, Sinclair mainly wrote fiction. Sinclair is arguably the best known of the so-called muckrakers, the forerunners of today’s investigative journalists who in the early 1900s exposed widespread corporate and political malfeasance. Upton Sinclair (1878-1968), American novelist, circa 1915.

In one of his many fits of boredom, Ignatius asked his sister-in-law for a book to read. There, his brother and sister-in-law made him as comfortable as possible as several different surgeries were performed on his badly injured legs. He was then sent to his childhood home to recover. He was hastily tended to by a field surgeon. He was only a soldier for a few years when he was wounded in the defense of a citadel by a cannon ball, which broke both of his legs. Soon, however, he grew restless at being idle all the time, so he joined the Spanish army at the first opportunity. There, Ignatius found himself quite swallowed by the pomp and glitter of court living. When he grew old enough, his parents sent him to be raised in the court of the Spanish king, Ferdinand the 5th. There was a limitation, a barrier of a very scarce repertoire even among scholars and people who worked directly with art. Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists was written during a watershed year for the Women’s Liberation movement. In her studies, Nochlin realized that, although people were able to name some female artists who produced works considered canonical throughout history, the ones cited were always the same. Instead, the author sought to dismantle what an almost essentially male and white group had constructed as a “concept” to establish what made an artist “great”. It's been 50 years since this provocative and rather shocking headline graced the pages of the 1971 issue of ARTnews magazine, announcing a text from the art historian Linda Nochlin□□ In the same year, it was published in a book, but being the subtitle of Art and Sexual Politics□□ The essay had previously been published in the book Woman in sexist society studies in power and powerlessness, which compiled texts by 30 women writers and scholars on sexism.Ĭonsidered quite controversial at the time, its purpose was not really to answer the question on the cover, as many might imagine. “Why were there no great female artists?”. |
